Pfizer Inc. is launching its own generic version of Viagra Friday, May 25, to make way for Pfizer Inc. Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is now the second-best-selling drug after Cialis (tadalafil).
Generic Viagra sales fell 2.4 percent to $2.8 billion in the U. S. last month, from a year earlier, according to data firm IMS Health. Generic sales fell 2.2 percent to $1.8 billion, while the cost-lowering and cost-saving medication accounted for only 1 percent of total U. sales.
The decision was made despite the fact that the Food and Drug Administration had approved the drug for erectile dysfunction in 1998. The drug was approved in more than 2,400 men, mostly men over the age of 40. Viagra was the second most-wributable drug in sales, behind Cialis. Generic sales rose 2.7 percent to $2.9 billion from a year earlier.
Pfizer also launched a new product called “Cialis Plus” in March, and a new product called “Viagra plus” in August.
